投桃报李，sending peach in
return get plum. It means return presents between friends or return a favour with
a favour. I have said that the currently 3,000 Chinese characters could stand
one million English words. It is easy to understand that in a translated
writing material (book or article) the frequency of each Chinese character will
appeared much higher than corresponding English word. It is easy to remember
but also feel vulgar and boring. So the Chinese people sometimes don’t say a
meaning directly. In most case they express the idea of ‘return a favour with a
favour’ use such a term as above, especially in bribe.
