Another Short History of Linguistics (3)

Robert H. Robins discussed the two controversies only standing on the view point of Indo-European language, never think about other language. If the Europe speaks a pictogram language, then things will be changed. For each character or word in pictogram is based on nature and one may traced back how the symbol from physical going to abstract. In early post I have shown you an example of how the joint of bamboo become the meaning of self-control. In fact, in pictogram, most words come from nature, but not by their sound or onomatopoeia, for there are plenty thing with no sound such as mountain, flower and heaven. Yet everything of physical have a shape, when the alphabetic letter were invented by the ancient Phoenician, the relationship between words and nature meanings were broken too. One cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs. As: http://classes.uleth.ca/200503/nmed1000b/4/writingtech.html

Said: “With the phonetic alphabet, the relationship between individual letters or groups of letters and the things they represent is arbitrary, based entirely on established convention. In a pictographic system, however, signs usually have a visual relationship to the things they represent.” Ancient people caring about logic, but today the most difficult issue is not logic but the information explosion. So the most important thing is study how far we can explore the phonetic and writing symbols in order we get most faster information. Forget about the old logic, if it does work, then this issue solved already. And if we can solved this issue, it would be a new logic for modern world.
